Weeping Cherub shirt

Artist: Albrecht Durer

This is a drawing of a Weeping Cherub drawn in chalk by Albrecht Durer. The first Cherubs are mentioned in several books of the Bible. You might remember the two cherubim who guarded the Garden of Eden.

The cherubs described in the bible have “four faces: of a lion, ox, eagle and man. They are said to have the stature and hands of a man and the feet of a calf and four wings.”

Although Durer was not an iconoclast, but was a Roman Catholic he was not comfortable with images of Saints and towards the end of his life he wondered what role religion played in the arts.

This painting although it is called, Weeping Cherub, is clearly not a drawing of a cherub. Perhaps Durer did not feel comfortable drawing a creature from the Bible who had four heads.

Ink is Perma-fused on the front of a 100% cotton Gildan brand shirt. These designs have a very soft hand and will last for years.
